  1. How to Install or change a theme –  click on Appearance>themes then add a theme or press “activate” on an existing theme
  2. How to approve or delete a comment – Click on Comments.  Hover over the comment and below the comment you can choose either approve, edit, spam or trash.  Spam assigns comments from this email/user as spam comments.  Trash deletes the comment
  3. How to add a user or change their permissions – Click on users.  You can select add and add a new user by filling out the form.  You can also click on a user and change any of their information other than their username.  If you delete a user with posts you can choose which user to assign their posts to
  4. How to add a post – Click on Post>Add new.  First enter a title in the title box.  Then in the main box you can add the body of the post in either visual  or text format.  Visual will add html tags for you to make the post show up as it looks.  Text will not input HTML but is where you can place raw code.
  5. However the good news is that there are not many of the actions that you do in WordPress that you cannot simply undo by uninstalling or deactivating something you try.  Add a plugin, activate it.  If you don’t like how it works or it seems to be messing up your website, simply go back in to your dashboard and deactivate and deleted it (remember to delete it to get rid of all of it) and you are right back to where you started.

  1. Set your permalinks – by default permalinks are set to the id number.  Go to Setting>permalinks and change to a common setting.  We recommend either post name only or a custom structure of /%category%/%postname%/
  2. Set your screen options – near the top of your dashboard page on the right hand side is a dropdown arrow next to “screen options” if you click on this you can select/unselect the options you need.  By removing options you don’t need you will remove clutter and make it easier to see and use the items you use.  Screen options can be set for most all sections of the dashboard like the main dashboard, the post/page listings, post/page entry/editing and so on
  3. AKISMET!! – no matter what other plugins you use ALWAYS use Akismet!  This plugin automatically deals with spam for you

21310674308_f8c48e46-origThese day most hosting providers have WordPress available for instant download.  In most cases there is an icon with the WordPress “W” symbol on it in the main section of your hosting control panel where you can install other programs.  If not then there will be something like fantastico or other script installing program which when you click on will give you a whole bunch of programs you can install on your hosting account.

Here is how it works: By clicking on the button(s) you will get to a small form which will ask you for so very basic information like what username and password you want to use and what you want to name your WordPress site.  Once you click install your WordPress will be automatically installed for you.
